The Process Of Fermentation
Welcome back. Today I’m going to be talking about the process of making alchol. Fermentation is how beer turns from hops and barley to alcohol, and also how most alcoholic drinks are made. Many people wonder how exactly the process works, and if that was you, I’ll hopefully explain it to you.
So what is fermentation? Fermentation is basically explained as using yeast to break down sugars and turn them into alcohol. This process is also used when food rots in nature. With alcohol fermentation though, instead of letting nature handle the process, humans have developed a controlled system. This usually occurs at a brewery, where yeast breaks down sugars until they are perfect for an alcoholic drink. This process is handled differently for different types of beverages.
For lagers and beer, barley and hops are used with yeast, which breaks down the ingredients. When yeast is combined with hops and barley, it finds the sugars inside them and breaks them down. Also, for the different types of drinks in these categories, such as ale, the process is slightly different. For beer, the yeast is allowed to sink to the bottom. This is where the breaking down occurs. In ale, this process is reversed. The yeast floats to the top and starts breaking down sugars.
Wine is another drink that’s made by the process of fermentation. Wine is made when you combine crushed grapes and yeast. Since grapes have loads of sugar in them, it’s a perfect environment for the yeast. Using a different grape changes the taste and color of the wine. On top of this, age plays more of a factor in wine than beers.
If you like stronger alcoholic drinks, you should be aware that it’s more difficult to make these than beers or wines. This is because the amount of alcohol in a stronger drink is too much for the yeast to have any effect on. The process is the same at first, with yeast breaking down sugars. After this process, though, the end result is too watered down to be consumed. This is where distilling comes into play. Distilling is the process of heating an alcohol mixture to a boiling point. The alcohol then turns to a vapor, which is collected, cooled, and bottled. This is why these drinks taste MUCH more alcoholic than beer or wine.
This is just a basic overview of fermentation. There are hundreds of different methods, and thousands of different beverages. However, the process is, at its heart, the same. Yeast is used to break down sugars in the primary ingredient, which, over time, converts it to an alcoholic drink. I hope you enjoyed this article on alchohol!
